Caring with Haring

Today we are celebrating the amazing artwork of Keith Haring. His Pop art is energetic and joyful. The students will be doing Haring-esque art to celebrate his birthday!

Every Day is Earth Day!

Jackie Hildering read us The Lorax on Friday.  We listened to the story with a whole bunch of classes from other parts of North America.  It was fun to connect to other children by Skype.  Thank you Mrs.Soltau-Heller for letting us join your Skype Story Time.  We learned about a lot of easy things we can do to help the earth.  Here are some ideas for you to try at home:

plant some trees for birds and for making oxygen….don’t use chemicals with the skull and crossbones or the skeleton hand…use vinegar to clean your house…use less water- turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth….remember to turn the tap off…take shorter showers…buy stuff that doesn’t come in plastic…BUY LESS…use reuseable containers instead of plastic baggies…recycle plastic bottles, cardboard and paper…walk more and drive less….bike to school….skateboard to school…do not use chemicals to kill plants…keep chemicals out of storm drains…wash your car on the grass with BIODEGRADABLE soap…play less video games and play outside instead… use less batteries…use RECHARGEABLE batteries…NEVER put batteries in the garbage can, put them in a container and take them to 7-mile for proper disposal…pick up garbage… put garbage in it’s proper place…use less paper, even less toilet paper…buy things that are made in Canada or closer to home…eat organic food…plant your own food garden…take care of your things so you don’t have to replace them…turn off the lights when you leave a room…put on a sweater if you are cold…take care of your car or boat so it doesn’t leak oil or antifreeze…take cloth bags to the grocery store…grass is supposed to go brown in the summer- water it less…compost………………..

Thanks for doing something good for the palnet every day:)

A VERY Happy Day for Our Class

Hooray! One of the White Rock eagle eggs has hatched! We have been patiently observing the eagles and their eggs for several weeks on the webcam. Today, when we checked in to see how things were going at the nest, we saw an eaglet! It was out of it’s shell and wiggling around a lot. Tomorrow we’ll see if the other eggs have hatched, too.

Here is a video of another eagle family and their hatching egg. Watch carefully to see what the mate brings to the nest. The same thing happened at the nest we are watching!

A Sad Day for Our Class

On Tuesday, April 17 we watched our hummingbird webcam and read the sad news that the nest with the two chicks we have been watching for weeks was attacked by a bird, and the chicks are gone. The mother survived and we hope she makes another nest and lays another clutch of eggs. It was such an amazing event to watch the live feed of the hummingbird nest every day and to witness and record the eggs and the development of the chicks. We will really miss checking in on the hummingbirds. This remarkable video shows the change from egg to chick. We will post what we learned about hummingbirds soon.

Oooohhh! We Love Oviparous Animals!

We have been studying oviparous animals. They are animals that lay eggs! Their are so many kinds of animals that lay eggs- birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects and even 2 kinds of mammal. Here is an egg-citing video of a chicken egg hatching. It looks like a lot of hard work for the chick. What do they have to help them break out of their shell?

Heron’s Nest Camera

We’re watching Blue Heron’s nesting!  They have 3 eggs!  When will the chicks hatch?  Keep watching to find out.  Click on the link below.

Return of the Robins

We are celebrating the return of the robins!  We have been reading and writing about robins, learning to draw them, watching them online, listening to their calls  and viewing them from our classroom window with our new binoculars!  We LOVE robins!  Next week we are going to learn a song about robins and then video tape our class singing it.  Here’s a video to help you learn the words and the tune:

Spring Break Games

                                                        Click to Count Fish!

Happy Spring Break! I hope everyone is having a great holiday and getting outside whenever the sun shines! For those times when the weather turns to rain or snow, try playing some of the games on our blog.  I added a bunch of great new math games under the math category links for you to try over the next few days, and don’t forget to visit the old favourites, too. Enjoy!

St.Patrick’s Potato Project

For St.Patrick’s Day, we’re learning about potatoes with Mrs.Soltau-Heller’s class. We’re weighing them, measuring them, doing scientific observations of them, print-making with them and cooking with them.  We are also learning about their life cycle and where they are grown in Canada.  Here is a video of a potato farm on Prince Edward Island.
